PALO ALTO, Calif. Utimaco, a worldwide leading manufacturer of hardware-based security solutions, today announced company metrics that show exponential growth rate and industry extension, following the company’s expansion to North America in February 2014. The Utimaco year-over-year growth rate has doubled in the last year, while customer adoption rate is up 50 percent and the partner channel network has grown by 25 percent. In 2015, Utimaco expects this trend to continue in the North American data security market as the proliferation of connected devices grows, posing greater security challenges than ever before to businesses and consumers.
“As the world continues to move toward ultimate connectivity, we’re also seeing a shift in many industries, recognizing the importance of privacy in critical infrastructures and looking for solutions to safe-keep data by maintaining connection integrity,” said Malte Pollmann, CEO of Utimaco. “Due to this shift, the application basis for Utimaco’s hardware-based security solution has grown at an unprecedented rate this past year. We are serving more and more customers seeking to adapt their businesses to the changing security landscape, from the automotive industry to public infrastructure. This year, trust and identity integrity will be the most pressing issues that need to be solved as vulnerabilities increase via expanding connectivity.”
Though Utimaco’s scalable and customizable hardware security module (HSM) serves as the cornerstone of trust within industries such as big data, conditional access control, manufacturing, mobile telecom, and payment solutions, there are two key industries that will experience major transformation in 2015 through the growing network of connected devices:

Automotive – With the growing implementation of vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and autonomous driving, all leading OEMs have announced their strategies regarding connected vehicles. Governments around the world are looking to regulate the introduction of new technology and to build a legal framework for those technologies to be rolled out in large scale infrastructure projects, ensuring protection against cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure.

Smart Energy – Faced with imminent attacks to critical physical infrastructure, both industry and government institutions alike are deploying HSM solutions to maintain privacy and control over high-value assets. A well placed attack could cause rolling black-outs on a state or nation-wide level. To avoid potentially devastating threat scenarios through third-party hijacking, governments across North America and Europe are fortifying their defenses with more reliable hardware solutions.

A grid of connected devices works the same way as an advanced IP-based network, based on the same communication model as the internet. Every device is equipped with an IP-address to be able to not only receive commands, but also send responses to the system and/or other participants in the network. But with each connected device, a new access point and a new vulnerability is introduced.
Utimaco’s FIPS-certified HSM generates and stores secure digital permits that are required for executing communication commands between connected devices, no matter the application. Each permit contains a cryptographic signature, generated via true random number generation, so that wearables and connected devices within a smart grid, a connected car or a smart home, etc. can verify its authenticity and integrity before executing the command. Faced with software security breaches, U.S. enterprises turn to hardware solutions to ensure the safe-keeping of consumer, corporate and citizen data and devices.
